Simon Carr Photography blog

Great wedding photography is a rare and wonderful thing. Reaching far beyond the spectacle of the day itself, great wedding photographs can capture a precious individual moment, freezing forever that split-second in time: the nerves of a best man as he sneaks another furtive peek at his crumpled speech; the warmth of a grandparent’s approving smile; the glowing pride of a mother and father; and, of course, the unbridled joy of the happy couple themselves.

My name is Simon Carr and I photograph weddings. My chosen profession is the most difficult thing I know, which is perhaps why doing it, and doing it to the best of my ability, gives me such immense satisfaction.

I come from the world of advertising. After graduating from Art College, I spent the next 15 years as an art director, creating compelling imagery for some of the most well known brands in the world. This was my proving ground. It was where I mastered my craft from behind the lens. Beyond the essentials of composition and lighting, which themselves take years to master, this previous vocation also taught me how to capture feelings. It taught me how to tell a story.

Six years ago I decided that I wanted to tell a different type of story. I wanted to tell stories that were of a deeply personal nature. Stories that people really cared about. Stories about love and about commitment. I chose to tell wedding stories. Examples of these stories can be found here within my portfolio, and you are invited to take a look through them. I’m proud of what I do. And, should you decide to commission me to tell your wedding story,
I sincerely hope that you will be proud of my work too.

Simon Carr Photography: Essex wedding, Jennifer and James at Leez Priory.

My first wedding photography of the 2012 season. Cold, windy…but hey, it’s January. This time last year, at the same venue, I managed to find myself snowed in.

Jennifer and James married in a beautiful church in Little Dunmow, Essex. I actually photographed a wedding in the same church around 3 years ago. It doesn’t get used for weddings very often, which is a shame, as the light levels are really good and the vicar is happy to let me shoot at the front. This is a position I like to be in during the service, as there is often some great expression from the couple. As always, I keep myself as unobtrusive as possible. I do not get too close, do not move around and definately won’t use flash with my natural style of photography.

We nipped back into the church after the service for a couple of quicky couple portraits and family groups…just too cold and windy outside. Before returning to Essex wedding venue Leez Priory.

Jennifer and James were a pleasure to work with. I wish them both many years of happiness together.

The Saville Club wedding photography. London wedding: Nikki and James

It been some while since the last wedding I photographed at The Saville Club, so it was nice to be back there in it’s wonderful surroundings for an early December wedding.

I met Nikki at The Saville Club first for some getting ready shots, then a short journey to The West London Synagogue for the service.

If there is one thing that I love about photographing a Jewish wedding, it’s the fantastic energy of the dancing. At one point it looked as though James could potentially be going straight through the ceiling!
